Feedback

You have a well presented and organised blog of your concept.  Do ensure that you can link your concept to real media practice, by using examples.  Your concept can be developed further by linking the development of you idea with the work of Negus on the music industry or Dyer on star image.

Presentation on examples of shot ideas and design elements.

Narrowing down our ideas.

Ghostpoet's video of 'cash and carry me home' inspired us to create a deep and dark video, designed to unsettle the audience. The design elements used within this video has given us an idea of the theme that will run through our video and the sort of minimalisitic prop type we will be using.
After watching this video we have come up with a list of possible props/ideas to use-:
- oil canister (set alight)
- see-through glasses
- a cardboard cutout of the innards of the body.
- large heads placed on small bodies- puppets
- clear bottles, jars, hanging up (fluorescent liquids in the bottle)

-Setting - blacked out studio space (minmal)
- using the natural light created by the flames of the oil canister
- possible spotlights focused on the props
- floorlights

Characters- Afalabei will be our main guy who will play the part as of the grime artist in question.

Research into real artists of a similar type.

Proposal for a new popular music artist.

Name:
Luo Benin (a typical African name, originally from Africa and very popular within the African culture).

Genre
Grime, Party music, Witch house electro, acoustic, Dance music and hip-hop.

Type of Act
The type of act we are trying to go with should be very naturalistic and simplistic. The main setting will be a black background; with floor lights (minimal lighting) the oil canister will create natural lighting on the main character (LUO). Throughout the pop video, we would like lots of high energy to be involved so the audience is entertained throughout the whole video. This type of video is crowd warming, always performing live. In order to create this naturalistic approach, never use backing tracks or auto tune. He’s a natural performer designed for the independent scene.

Star image
The star image we would like our band/artist to have is strictly independent.  The artist sees mainstream music as the enemy, rapping about social concerns and politics. Making people think about the problems people face in day-to-day life. He also relates to his own culture a lot, such as the African culture he is from and has experienced from a young age. Also the feeling of acknowledgement that people are in the same boat as them, they can receive helps and support on a day-to-day life. And many people have similar lifestyles just don’t know it. I believe it will attract the correct audience to this particular artist. Within our video, it will have a lot of creative and meaningiful props, such as the body parts- intestines/hearts etc. this will create a particular audience interested in science as well as how the human body works and how people relate to it. Other props such as the oil canister can be an effect but as well a source of light and heat, warming the artist to feel safe and warm. We suggested possibly using puppet dolls and bottles hanging, this could suggest objects from the main artist childhood/past, which he can relate to. And hopefully the audience will too, with the puppet he could either of had nightmares or good experiences with them.

Choice of Track:
The choice of the track is very important, especially as this makes most of the music video. In order for the track to suit the type of video we’ve gone for, throughout the track should be portrayed as 'punchy' with throbbing bass lines and fast rapping, in order to keep the audience on there toes and excited/thrill them. Whilst he raps he has an anarchist view on the subjects and topics he talks about which mean he raps in a poet like form. Overall it is important for the audience to realize that the artist has a strong link and connection with them, trying to relate to their problems and experiences, by expressing himself through music.

Initial ideas/treatment

Song- Mikill Pane – Party animal remix, featuring empressa.
The Genre of the song and act we are doing is - Grime/ dance music. The reason we have decided to investigate The Grime/ Dance genre is because it’s a genre that is of huge interest to our age group. It is also a new genre. Research – History of Grime/ Dance.

The grime/ dance genre was first discovered in
East London in the early 2000’s.  Dizzie Rascal and Wiley were two of the first artists to bring the genre to the mainstream audience between 2003- 2004. Although it was brought to the attention of the mainstream media Grime / dance is still considered as ‘Underground Music’. Record labels are still to acknowledge the Genre and expose it to the Global market.

Our type of act will have a particular style. we would like this style to be Individual, quirky.
These are a few images of the type of look we are going for. We want our act to look more old school and retro.

These four images relate to the style and type of act we would like to convey, images are vital, especially as they have to fit our genre and overall style.

The Music Industry

The music industry, also known as the music business is known for selling compositions, recordings and performances of music.
Within the industry the many organizations and individuals that operate are usually;
-          the musicians who compose and perform the music
-          the companies and professionals who create and sell recorded music, eg music publishers, producers, studios, retail and online music stores.
-          Those that present live music performances. Eg booking agents, performances right organizations.
-          Those that present live music performances. Eg booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew.
-          Professionals who assist musicians with their careers. Eg talent managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers.
-          Those who broadcast music. Eg satellite and broadcast radio.

It is known that in the late 19th centrury and early 20th century, the music industry was dominated by the publishers of sheet music.
By the middle of the century records had replaced sheet music as the largest player in the music business.
Since 2000, sales of recorded music have dropped off substantially, while live music has increased in importance.

Five "major corporate labels" dominate recorded music —

1)      Universal Music Group
2)      Sony Music Entertainment,
3)      Warner Music Group
4)       EMI
5)      BMG

Oligopoly is a selection of companies that own and/or control a an area of the market. in this context it would be the five named companies above.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligopoly

These five companies, own 76% of the music industry, and the remaining 24% are subsidiaries (smaller labels of a larger label), usually independent labels.
Each of these labels consists of many smaller companies and labels serving different regions and markets.

We have learnt that the live music industry is dominated by Live Nation, the largest promoter and music venue owner. Live Nation is a former subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, which is the largest owner of radio stations in the United States.

Other important music industry companies include Creative Artists Agency- this company is a management and booking company.

Also Apple Inc, which runs the worlds largest music industry- the iTunes store. The iTunes Store is a software-based online digital media store operated by Apple.

There are many famous quotes that caught my eye and interest me within the music industry and what is a music video.
Firstly- "Music videois not primarily a commodity form but a promotional one"- Andrew Goodwin 1992, This quote means that you dont buy you just watch.

We learnt that a music promo video means a short, moving image product, shot for the express purpose of accompanying a pre-exisint music track and usually in order to encouage sales of the music in another format (generally Cd). This is a form of Synergy.
Important quotes and key points that i learnt were-
- ‘Music video is a promotional tool.’ (much like an extended advertisement) – Negus.
-Joe Saltzman said: ‘They now provide pictures for the songs in our heads . Goodbye, imagination…All kids have to o is to watch and listen, stare straight ahead. No need to think, to embellish, to create, to imagine. The electric fix is in.’

Embeded whole prelim video

Here is the prelim video we contributed to, In my group we shot and edited the last three segments in this video.
There was three groups which contributed to this video, this is filmed over the course of a day and edited during a week.

Throughout the video, alot of screen time has been given to the lead singer, as he is the main focus. The lead singer in this video, dictates the image of the group as he is the front man and all attention should be focused on you.

We desinged the Set of this video too, we went for an eery, dark atmosphere, with neon lights and all there equipment to suit the bands image. Another reason for this is try to enforce the bands image there are trying to show off.

Music video analysis including star image

NAME OF YOUR ARTIST/BAND AND TRACK: Calvin Harris - Feel So Close

WHAT IS THE STAR IMAGE?

A star's image becomes a readily recognized sign that is used in many different media forms Stars can use the fact that their image has meaning by allowing it to be used for advertising purposes.
The star image is a term that describes the development of the star image over time, and the stories that surround a particular artist. The music business heavily relies on the relatively few big names to fund its activities; as it usually fails to connect with popular audiences. Therefore the Meta-narrative of the star image has an important role to play in the music video production process.

Calvin Harris is a UK pop star that not many people have heard of in comparison to the numerous worldwide American pop stars, which nationally are recognized.
Calvin Harris a techno artist not many people who like for example death metal or folk music may have heard of him so because he is slightly low key to many artists he doesn’t really portray that star image potential but because he's song creations are so broad and memorable to many he wouldn’t be forgotten and he's outlook on he's videos show that he doesn't want to be one of those artists who fade into the background.
Recently in the media he has released to sounds, that have proven to be successful, these songs are ‘bounce’ and ‘Feel so close’.
His genres- Electro pop, electro house, nu-disco, synthpop.
It’s such a simple yet Works so perfectly.
As tradition, it is set with a girl and guy, simply in love. And this is shown through the way that Calvin Harris is depicted in this video. There are three different scenarios with different age groups, showing passion and love.
Cowboy, ballerina and cheerleaders/street dance Group, café scene with Calvin and this blonde girl.

We see Calvin as an innocent, gentle, living, caring and needy guy for love. Who gets what he wanted in the first place, this girl.
He isn’t seen much in the video, but the 4 scenarios work well together, break it up and give a range of ages and hobbies, passions and love relationships starting.

NAME OF YOUR ARTIST/BAND AND TRACK: BEYONCE KNOWLES - Run The World (Girls)

WHAT IS THE STAR IMAGE OF THE ARTIST/BAND?

This is a girl-power infused music video, with a very well known artist Beyonce. One of the most recognizable characters in modern-day R&B. her many occupations are- Singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, dancer, entertainer, choreographer, model, video director.
The star image depicted from Beyonce in this video is –

- Girl power
- Female
- Independent
- Black talent
- Strong
- Courageous
- Female empowerment

Beyonce Knowles has stated, "I like to dress sexy and I carry myself like a lady’, with pure confidence she said the way she dresses is purely for stage. The media often use the term bootylicious, due to her famous curves and toned bum and body. This is very clear in this video as well, and she is very famous for this too.

Beyonce leading an army of women, seemingly in confrontation against an army of riot control cops. Beyonce can be seen as a leader, a lady of high importance and a very high status. However, the women also dance seductively with the cops, and at the end of the video, the women salute them. At times in the video, the cop car can be seen sitting behind the line of dancing women, indicating that it actually belongs to them.

NAME OF YOUR ARTIST/BAND AND TRACK: Christina Perri- Jar of hearts

WHAT IS THE STAR IMAGE OF THE ARTIST/BAND?

Christina Judith Perri is an American singer and songwriter from Philadelphia. Her song "Jar of Hearts" charted in the United States after it was featured on the Fox television shows So You Think You Can Dance in 2010. Christina being on the top charts influenced her reputation of being well known in England, before many people in England didn’t know who she was, due to being on low key in America. The help of the television show, uplifting her being well known and recognized.

Christina star image in this video-
- Jar of Hearts" is an autobiographical song for Christina Perri, recalling an ex-boyfriend who wanted to reconnect after a tough breakup, and the pain of that struggle comes across loud and clear from the opening line, "No I can't take one more step towards you / cause all that's waiting is regret."
- This gives us the impression, she is weak, in love and given up on moving forward and taking that one step.
- Christina Perri does a great job building up her strength as the song moves toward the chorus, where the main character demands, "Whom do you think you are?" There have been countless "you did me wrong" songs through the history of pop music, but identifying a serial dater as a collector of broken hearts is one of the more unique ways of displaying both hurt and frustration.
- The whole ambiance and setting on this music video is gothic, depressing, sad and lonely. And this is reinforced through Christian’s behaviour, facial expresses and reactions. Instead of having red rose petals for love, there black. Exaggerating love has died and faded away.

Research of acres of life

The first information we were able to discover about them, was on there facebook page- this information was posted on there information section on there fan page.

"we are an English pop-punk band from Hastings, East Sussex, that offically formed in March 2009. We are made up of 3 members, Sam Vincent, Yannis Nicolaou and Joey Thomas, all aged between 16-19. We are currently LOOKING FOR A DRUMMER, due to the recent departure of our old drummer (university). So far we have played many gigs around Hastings, Bexhill and Eastbourne, all of which have been recieved positively. We have made a name for ourselves for having very fun, energetic live shows, and catchy sing-along pop-punk anthems. :D Also we have gained 1st place in the Hastings Music Festival, had a track played on Hastings Rock Radio, and performed a live set and interview on Bexhill FM Radio. We have also recorded a number of demo tracks and gained a growing fanbase. :) We are currently searching for a record label, and playing regular gigs! "

Here is the bands logo, which has been used to merchandise tshirts and hoodies and also for people to recognize there brand name and iamge. It clearly displays the groups name and a recognizable logo that differs from other bands.

Here is a picture of the group itself. It includes four band members, which are all male and i would say they have an indie/punk group image. This is due to there style of clothes, hair colours and style too.

Another form of research we did, was looking them up on facebook, we discovered a facebook page, where all there groupies had liked it, information on tours and also dates on when theyd be performing or playing gigs. This facebook page, also showed more picutres of the band members , links to twitter and other facebook events pages such as there gigs and performances. You were able to access this page through google as well as facebook. Having a facebook page, allows acres of life to be able to recieve feedback, suggestions but also it is a form of business and promotion as well.

They also had a Twitter page, not many people had followed it, but the fact they have it allows them to advertise there events and gigs on another form of social networks. Here is a screenshot of there twitter page, including there logo and brand name so it is easily recognised. on the actual page, most of the tweets include links to there facebook page and gigs they are peforming. The fact they have only tweeted eleven times suggests they are new to this and dont use it that often, in comparison to facebook where they have 541 fans.

Also, most importantly we looked them up on youtube, to watch previous performances and see what sort of music they were. They had many videos that they posted online, and most of them were just filmed on a hand help camera by a friend at one of there gigs. Most of there gigs were either at village halls or similar places.  Here are a few of there videos, and also we came across them having studio diary's and also video diary's of when they came on a 'road trip' to Hurtwood house.

DRUMMER WANTED!
Hometown
Hastings, East Sussex

This is one of 'Acres of life' video diarys,
They have made many video diaries over the last few years, and this clip is from the video diary they made whilst they were filming at Hurtwood. Each day they had to travel quite far and the video diary is based on there journeys, there opinions and it also allows us to get an insight in there life outside performing. But we learn that there life’s revolve around music and this was evident whilst watching there videos. I enjoyed watching there videos, which were rather humorous as well as entertaining.
Below is a video Acres of fire have edited and put together themselves. It shows a range of video clips of them performing, rehearsing and also shows a wide range of skills have they acquired visually and physically.
